A police raid has been conducted on a motor shop in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina after authorities discovered that the father-and-son duo had been making replica Ferrariand Lamborghini cars.
The police found eight supercars in the factory, all in different stages of completion, replicating vehicles from the two Italian brands. Along with the eight works in progress, police found a collection of tools, molds, and piles of various car parts in the workshop. While the officials did not reveal what parts these counterfeit cars were being built with, local newspapers reported that in one case the engine used was from a Chevrolet Omega, otherwise known as the Cadillac Catera in the US.
Police officials revealed that the replicas were being offered and sold to unknown social media channels, going for prices between $45,000 USD and $60,000 USD — just a fraction of what a genuine Ferrari or Lamborghini would set you back. The raid came after complaints from the Italian brands, tipping officials off about the illegal operation. So far, there’s no information on how many of these counterfeit supercars have been made, or even already sold into the market and onto the roads.
As a result of the raid, the factory has now been shut down, and the father and son has been arrested on industrial property charges.
Elsewhere in the automotive world, the Lotus Evija has become world’s first fully-electric hypercar.
